The Phoenix Police Department has identified the driver who died after crashing head-on into a city bus early Monday morning in west Phoenix.

Authorities said Delfino Mota Jr. , 48, died at an area hospital after the crash happened near 51st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road around 4 a.m.

Detectives believe Mota Jr. tried to pass traffic in his truck using a left-turning lane when he swerved to avoid another car, entering oncoming traffic and hitting the Valley Metro bus.

Mota Jr. was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. No passengers were in the bus at the time of the crash, police told Arizona’s Family. The bus driver was uninjured.

When Arizona’s Family arrived at the scene, the front of a pickup truck was heavily damaged, and there was damage to the side of a Valley Metro bus.

Lower Buckeye Road was closed in both directions from 45th Avenue to 50th Avenue but has since reopened.
