Crews are now removing a small airplane that crashed into the backyard of a north Phoenix home and on the roof of another on Wednesday morning.

A representative from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) came to the neighborhood to remove the plane Thursday, but it will be a long process. The plane’s body was lifted from the backyard with a crane around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Fuel leakage from the aircraft was identified as a significant cleanup concern. Phoenix Fire officials said the fuel spill would be a major undertaking to address before the plane could be moved.

A strong odor of fuel could be smelled at the scene throughout Wednesday. While the odor was not present Thursday morning, it’s unclear if the fuel was fully cleaned. Arizona’s Family has reached out to fire officials for updates.

Doorbell camera footage captured the moment the plane went down around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The video shows the aircraft entering the frame at low altitude over the desert area behind the neighborhood before making a quick turn and diving into the home.

Phoenix fire officials said the plane struck the room of a 4-month-old baby inside one of the homes. The infant was not hurt. A resident of one of the homes was also injured by shrapnel. Officials described all injuries as “minor.”

Neighbors who live near the Deer Valley Airport said they have had ongoing concerns about living under the airport’s flight path.

“About a week ago, we were sitting back here and [my daughter] just said like, ‘Wow, a plane could crash in our backyard.’ And I was like, don’t say that because I actually think that sometimes,” one neighbor said.
