A Casa Grande police officer put his life on the line to save a man from a burning home early Friday.
Officers were called out to a house on fire just before 5 a.m. near Florence Street and state Route 287.
Officer Samuel was the first to arrive and could hear someone yelling for help in the back of the house, investigators said.
“Where are you?” the officer shouts as he looks for the man.
He then hops over a fence.
“Where are you sir?” said the officer.
He continues to run.
“I’m right here,” said the man. “Trying to get the lock off this door, cut it somehow.”
Samuel found a man who was trapped inside the house behind the back door, which had an added security door with a padlock on it.
Samuel tries to jiggle the door loose, but it won’t move because of the padlock.
The officer is heard coughing in the video because of the smoke from the fire.
The officer tries to kick the lock but to no avail. He’s coughing the entire time.
“You’re going to be OK,” said the officer. “I’m worried about you right now.”
Samuel asks the man if he can get to the windows but he says he can’t.
The officer doesn’t give up and eventually gets the lock and security door to break.
“C’mon, c’mon, c’mon,” the officer tells the man.
Samuel takes his hand and leads him out of the doorway.
“I got him out,” the officer tells others on the radio.
The homeowner was treated for minor injuries on the scene.
Three officers were treated for smoke inhalation and two of them had to go to the hospital, including Officer Samuel.
