Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding a couple accused of assaulting two hikers in central Arizona Saturday morning.
A man and woman were on Granite Mountain Trail 261 when they came across another couple walking with a large brown dog, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department.
The two couples had a short argument about the dog. The man who owned the dog allegedly punched the other man several times. When the second hiker tried to help, the other dog owner, a woman, attacked her.
The alleged assault ended when the man who owned the dog pointed a small black handgun at one of the hikers before he and the woman left the area, heading back toward the main parking lot.
The hikers sustained minor injuries, but it is unclear if the injuries were from the fight or if shots were fired.
Deputies were unable to find the suspects, who are believed to have left before they arrived. The suspect is a man in his 30s or 40s with a thin build and slight facial hair. The woman was in her 30s or 40s with long blonde hair. She was seen wearing dark-colored shorts and a white wristwatch.
YCSO is urging anyone who was in the Granite Basin Lake area, including the trails, parking lots, or campgrounds, on Saturday morning and may have seen this couple to contact the department at (928) 771-3260, or to submit a tip to Yavapai Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232.
